A literary controversy between C.S. Lewis and E.V. Rieu over the nature of poetry and personal expression. Lewis argues against the "personal heresy"—the idea that a poem's value lies in revealing the poet's personality—contending instead that great poetry transcends the author's individual life. This collection presents both perspectives in a spirited debate about how we should read and interpret literature, offering insight into Lewis's critical thinking and his views on the relationship between art and autobiography.
