About Readers Compass Bookstore

Our Story

Readers Compass Bookstore was born out of a simple belief: the right book, found at the right moment, can change everything. We opened our doors in Penn Yan, New York — a small town with a big literary heart, nestled in the heart of the Finger Lakes — because we wanted our community to have a place where books are taken seriously and readers are treated as the curious, discerning people they are.

Rooted in Penn Yan & the Finger Lakes

Penn Yan sits at the northern tip of Keuka Lake, surrounded by vineyards, farmland, and a community that values craft and authenticity. That same spirit shapes everything we do. We're not a chain. We're your neighbors — and we curate our shelves the way a good neighbor would: thoughtfully, honestly, and with genuine care for what you'll actually enjoy reading.

How We Curate Our Catalog

Every title in our collection earns its place. We organize our catalog by genre — from literary fiction and narrative nonfiction to history, mystery, and beyond — so you can browse the way readers actually think. We seek out books that reward attention: well-crafted prose, meaningful stories, and authors who have something real to say. You won't find filler here.

Whether you're shopping in person or online, our genre-focused selection is designed to make discovery feel effortless and intentional at the same time.

What Makes Shopping With Us Different

  • Independent expertise. Our recommendations come from readers, not algorithms.
  • Curated, not overwhelming. A smaller, well-chosen selection beats an endless scroll every time.
  • Local roots, online reach. Shop from anywhere and support an independent bookstore that's part of a real community.
