Into each life rain must all...But for Joseph Martin, it's more like a downpour. A Pennsylvania farm in the 1930s may sound idyllic, yet for this Old Order Mennonite family, times are tough. Mother suffers from severe mental illness; her doctor decides that she needs to be placed in an institution. Aunt Lizzie steps in to help with child care and housework, but she cannot sweep away the rainclouds that roll into their lives. Poverty plagues the family even after the war; prison awaits Joseph if he refuses to serve in the military; problem fitting in with the young folks seem impossible to overcome.
