From Prairie to Jungle

George leaped out of bed. It was moving day! Today, on June 22, 1948, a large group of mennonites would begin their journey from the prairies of Canada to the jungles of Paraguay. First would be a tree day train ride to the port in Quebec City, then twenty-four days at sea on board the huge ship Volendam. After another few days on a train through the South American countryside, the travelers would arrive in the untamed jungle. Far away from their former homes, they would start a new colony with the freedom to have their own schools and preserve their culture. As George and his brother Peter hurried downstairs, questions filled their minds. What adventures awaited? Would they make it safely Paraguay? What would life be like in the jungle?
